This is a response to Carrie’s Post about the School Bus Bullying. I liked your ability not just report on the outrageousness of the story, but to connect it to the psychology of the classroom. You made a very astute observation when you said, “I think this is an example of how adults can abuse the power they have over children. If we look at this not just as a physical issue but even a mental issue, teachers can sometimes play a role. Whether or not they are trying to, some teachers can go over board with the mental abuse of students.” Teachers do mentally abuse students the same way that parents can abuse their child without touching them and the way that countries abuse other countries without even thinking about the damage it will eventually do to society and the world. It only takes a spark to start a fire, they say, and we could either spark a fire to destroy our students’ confidence, or spark one to promote it, and it all hinges on what we value as teachers and what we choose to promote.
